BREAST REDUCTION
What is Breast reduction surgery?
The whole breast may be anatomically divided into several regions according to the 3 main arteries and their branches that supply blood to the tissues. Simply put, when the breast is reduced, it still needs its vascular supply from at least 1 of the arteries. An artery, its branches and the tissue surrounding it form a pedicle. Therefore, a great variety of breast reduction methods essentially differ from one another in the pedicle that is kept during the operation as the main irrigator.
Sensation of breasts and nipples are preservedEven though the tissues are resected, sensation and function of the breasts and nipples are preserved by choosing the right incision pattern and resection technique.
In addition to that, there are several incision patterns to choose from, depending on the amount of tissue that has to be resected from the breasts. Wise, also known as inverted "T", and vertical incisions are the most commonly used patterns.
Inverted "T" incisions incisions
With the most typical inverted T pattern there are 3 main incisions made: the first one is around the edge of the areola, the second one starts from below the areola and down to the inframammary crease and the third one is a line along the inframammary fold.Vertical incisions
A vertical pattern is the same as inverted T only without the third incision under the breast. Surgical breast reduction is a safe procedure with a low risk of major complications and is often recommended for both medical and aesthetic reasons.
Breast reduction surgery for medical reasons
Breast reduction becomes a medical necessity when the size and weight of the bust start affecting one’s general well-being. Excessively large breasts are associated with shoulder, neck, back pain and numbness that may later result in some serious medical conditions that affect the spine and upper body muscles, such as scoliosis, etc. Moreover, a very large bust may limit one’s everyday activities such as exercising and impair one’s social life contributing to an increased daily mental distress. If a person experiences physical or psychological discomfort due to the abnormal properties of one’s bust, a doctor should be consulted.
What is the difference between breast reduction and breast lift?
is to make one’s breasts look smaller by removing excess skin and tissue, whereas breast lift adjusts the volume of the breast regardless of their size or shape. However, both of these procedures share techniques of tissue resection and skin incision patterns, with the main difference being the amount of breast tissue resected. Therefore, breast reduction is essentially the same procedure as breast lift but only performed on patients with excessively large breasts.
Who is a proper candidate for breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction should be considered if the size of the breasts affects the quality of one’s everyday life and well-being, as it may significantly improve patient’s self-esteem and body proportions. It is important for a candidate to be in good physical health and have realistic expectations about surgery outcomes, too. As safe and reliable as reduction mammoplasty is, it may be successfully performed on patients who are overweight with BMI up to 33-35.
Success depends on patient‘s determination to cooperate during the pre-operative period. Here are some major pre-surgery instructions to follow:
- Practice healthy lifestyle. Exercising regularly, having your diet balanced and staying hydrated will strengthen your body and the recovery will be fast and smooth.
- Stop using tobacco products at least 3 weeks before the procedure and avoid consuming alcohol.
- Do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and other blood thinners at least 10 days prior to the surgery as they may induce bleeding during the procedure.
- Follow your specific pre-operative instructions as they may vary depending on your personal medical history.
Recovery after breast reduction surgery
Recovery after breast reduction takes time and patience for it to be successful.
Post-operative patients are expected to stay at home for at least 1 week. During that time one should refrain from even mildly strenuous activities involving upper body, such as lifting, pushing or pulling heavy objects, driving etc.
It is required to wear a support bra at all times for 6-8 weeks after the procedure. The bra not only provides support for the breasts, but also holds them in a proper position and so the healing process is accelerated.
Breast reduction scars are distinctively noticeable in the first few months after the surgery and slowly fade into a thin line later on. However, an unlikely abnormal scarring may be fixed with an additional surgical procedure, if necessary.
Bruising and swelling around the breast may be present for up to 8 weeks as a clinical manifestation of a local inflammatory response to a surgery. If it lingers on, a doctor should be consulted.
After breast reduction surgery
Once the surgery has been performed, only a few more things should be taken into consideration for a smoother recovery:.
Incisions
It is important to keep the incision sites dry and clean. In the first few days after the procedure patients are encouraged to shower and maintain their personal hygiene routine or adjust it to the doctor‘s recommendations.
Pain
It is not unusual to feel pain in the first 2 weeks after surgery. It should be managed with painkillers individually prescribed by the operating doctor.
Clothes
Loose fitting clothes are advised for patient convenience as they are easier to put on and off.
Activity
During the first post-operative week it is recommended to stay at least minimally active by taking short walks several times a day etc. Light physical activity has a significant positive effect on blood circulation and therefore promotes the healing process.
Alcohol
Patients are strongly discouraged from consuming alcohol and using tobacco products, especially while taking any kind of prescription drugs after surgery, for it may provoke some toxic side effects and complications.
VERY IMPORTANT! It's the medical team at our partner clinics who will decide which medical procedures are best suited to each patient's situation! You are the only one, together with the doctors, to decide on the desired care.
